An Integrated Circuit Compatible Compact Package for Thermal Gas Flowmeters

    Get PDF
An original packaging method suitable for integrated thermal mass flow sensors is presented. The method consists in the application of a plastic transparent adapter to the chip surface. The adapter is sealed to the chip surface by means of a thermal procedure. By this approach it is possible to selectively convey the fluid flow to reduced chip areas, avoiding contact with the pads. Fabrication and testing of a very compact flow sensor is described.Comment: Submitted on behalf of EDA Publishing Association (http://irevues.inist.fr/EDA-Publishing

    engineering thoughts on hydrogen embrittlement

Abstract Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) is a topical issue for pipelines transporting sour products. Engineers need a simple and effective approach in materials selection at design stage. In other words, they must know if a material is susceptible to cracking, to be able of: selecting the right material and apply correct operational measures during the service life. Following ASTM F2078, HE is "a permanent loss of ductility in a metal or alloy caused by hydrogen in combination with stress, either externally applied or internal residual stress". In many cases, hydrogen can play a role in crack propagation, as for instance in Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and Corrosion Fatigue (CF). Three parameters are required to cause failure: presence of hydrogen, tensile stress, and material susceptibility. The two previous ones are triggering the failure, while the root cause is usually material susceptibility. This is why material selection is the important step to safely manage engineering structural materials. As an example, material selection for sour service pipeline is the object of well-known standards, e.g. by Nace International and EFC: they pose some limits in the sour service of steels, with reference to surface hardness. These standards have shown some weak points, namely: In the definition of sour service; In defining the role of crack initiation and propagation, considering that in Hydrogen embrittlement, stress state and stress variations are very important. As for the second point, in hydrogen generation anodic processes shall be taken into account too. For instance, there is a relationship between corrosion resistance and crack susceptibility. In carbon and low alloy steels, cracking will not normally occur when there is a significant corrosion rate. If a brittle layer (or a brittle spot) is present on the metal surface, this one can initiate a crack

Thermal Noise-Boosting Effects in Hot-Wire-Based Micro Sensors

This article proposes an original approach aimed at modelling the noise density in sensors based on a single hot wire or pairs of thermally coupled wires. The model consists in an original combination of a previous electrothermal model of the wire with well-established assumptions on the thermal noise in conductors that carry moderate current densities. A simple method for estimating the model parameters with simple impedance spectroscopy is suggested. The predicted power spectral densities of the wire thermal noise differ from the result of previously presented analytical models, stimulating further experimental studies. The effects of the electrothermal feedback of both hot wires and hot-wire pairs on flicker noise is also intrinsically covered by the proposed approach

    A two-stage switched-capacitor integrator for high gain inverter-like architectures

    Get PDF
A discrete-time, switched capacitor integrator is presented. The integrator is based on a two-stage architecture where the first stage converts the input voltage into a charge that is accumulated into the second stage. The main strength of the proposed circuit is a higher dc gain with respect to previous solutions, making it optimal for low-voltage inverter-like integrators. A further advantage is the fact that, in contrast with existing solutions, the output voltage is valid across the whole clock cycle. Theoretical analysis of the circuit is performed to calculate the dependence of the integrator dc gain and input-referred offset voltage on the corresponding parameters of the constituting amplifiers. Discrete-time simulations are performed to estimate the gain and phase error with respect to an ideal integrator. The results of electrical simulations performed on an inverter-like prototype, designed with the UMC 0.18-μm CMOS process, are presented to show the impact of non-idealities from the amplifiers and switches

The fodder grass resources for ruminants: A indigenous treasure of local communities of Thal desert Punjab, Pakistan

    Get PDF
Indigenous people have been using local grasses for rearing their animals for centuries. The present study is the first record of traditional knowledge of grasses and livestock feeding system from the Thal desert in Pakistan. A snowball sampling method was used to identify key participants. Information was collected from the respondents from six districts of Thal Desert through semi-structural questionnaire and site visits. The data was analyzed through Smith's salience index and Composite Salience using ANTHROPAC package in R software. On the whole 61 grasses were recorded from the study area: most of them belong to the Poaceae family (52 species). Based on palatability grasses were categorized into three major groups i.e. (A) High priority, (B) Medium priority and (C) Low priority. Species in Group A, abundantly present in the study area represent a source of highly palatable forage for all ruminants. 232 (141M +91W) local participants were interviewed. Participants were grouped into three major age categories: 20-35 (48 participants), 36-50 (116 participants) and 51-67 years old (68 participants). ANTHROPAC frequency analysis confirmed the Smith's salience index and Composite Salience; Cynodon dactylon was the favorite species (6.46 SI, 0.6460 CS) followed by Cymbopogon jwarancusa (5.133 SI, 0.5133 CS) and Sorghum sp. was the third most salient species (5.121 SI, 0.5121 CS). Grasses were mostly available during the months of August and October and had also ethnoveterinary importance. This document about the traditional feeding of livestock in Thal Desert can underline the importance of conserving a traditional knowledge, which was poorly documented before
